Rikon 18" x 24" Variable Speed Lathe with 2.5HP 230V motor

18" x 24" Variable Speed Lathe 70-1824VSR2 offers woodturners a variety of new features that make it the most versatile lathe in RIKON's line - swivel headstock, spindle lock, spindle indexing, 3 bed extension positions, variable speeds fronm 50 to 3850 RPMs, digital read out display, moveable magnetic control box, 115V outlet for plugging in lights or other accessories, and increased tool storage. Constructed of heavy cast iron, the bed, classically shaped legs, headstock, tailstock and tool rest assemby provide over 370 pounds of stability when turning. Plus, the large 2.5HP 230V motor gives the extra power and dependability needed for working on the largest bowls or oversized spindle projects. The newly designed headstock can swivel 180 degrees for outboard turning! This feature expands the bowl or platter diameters from 18" to 27-1/2", or up to 44" if the headstock is secured facing forward (A freestanding tool rest is needed for this setup (not provided)). Spindle turnings up to 24" in length can be done with the lathe, but with the addition of the optional 16" long 70-908 Bed Extension, turnings up to 40" are possible. The lathe has 3 additional machined surfaces on the sides of the bed to mount this special bed extension that increase the turning options even further. Lathe includes spur center, live center, 3-3/8” faceplate, 12" tool rest with 1" diameter post, MT2-MT2 spindle alignment tool, knock-out bars, wrenches and tool holder.

• Powerful 2.5HP, 230V, 14A motor gives extra power for all turning needs. The lathe uses an inverter to control the motor's operating efficiency, speed and regulates torque to give the craftsman the consistancy needed when turning projects.
• Electronic variable speed controls give a wide range of operating speeds from 50 to 3850 RPM. Convenient digital RPM readout display for viewing forward and reverse rotation speeds. Magnets on back of the corded control box allow it to be placed anywhere easily accessible to turners for quick controlling of the lathe speeds or for emergency stopping.
• Headstock swivels 180 degrees and can be locked in any desired position facing right for spindle work, to the front or left outboard for bowl and platter turning. Headstock also features a spindle lock for easier installing and removing of chucks, or to lock work in position for adding details to projects. The lathe also features a 24 position indexing for securing the spindle to make accurate, spaced patterns on work such as fluting, grooving, drilling , carving or wood buring designs.
• Lathe Bed has machined ends and front for adding the optional 16" 70-908 extension to increase turning capabilities. Turning spindles can increase from 24" to 40" with the extension. Bowl diameters can increase in diameter from 18" to 27-1/2" in the outboard setting with optional 70-908 extension and 70-959 4" tool rest height estension, or up to 44" when the headstock is turned forward (a free-standing tool rest base is reqeuired for this (not provided).

• Hefty, ball-bearing construction for smooth, precise Spindle operation. Spindle has 1-1/4"x8TPI threading for mounting chucks and faceplates, and also accepts MT2 tapered end accessories. The spindle and tailstock are through-bored with 3/8" holes for using knockout bars to remove centers, and to permit mounting of optional vacuum chucks.
• The tailsock's RAM quill travel extends out a generous 4-1/2". Tailstock self-eject live centers so knock-out bars are not needed The body of the casting includes front storage for live centers and tools, and storage of the 3-3/8" faceplate at the back of the tailstock. Additional storage of the lathe tools and accessories is provided with a tool holder that can be mounted on the end of the lathe bed.
• Lathe includes spur center, 60° live center, 3-3/8” faceplate, 12" tool rest with 1" diameter post, MT2-MT2 spindle alignment tool, 2 knock-out bars, 6 hex wrenches, 4 open-ended wrenches and tool holder.
